November Meeting Report

November Meeting Report – “Things that go Bump in the Night”

Tonight our speaker was Judith Ineson from Southampton University who gave us a fascinating talk about the objects in the night sky. She started by explaining about some of the objects in the Magellanic Clouds which we cannot see from the UK.

Using some spectacular images from Hubble we learnt about prototype stars, and star formations. Then we had a closeup of some asteroids that pass close by to us. Did you know that you can tell the age of a Globular Cluster by looking at the colour of the stars?

Lots of talks about bubbles and how they protect us and did you know that there is a bridge between the Magellanic clouds which is a mere 43 light years long.

A great talk from Susan who finished with a animation of how the Milk way will meet the Andromeda galaxy.
